How to Use Memory Books to Promote Remembering

Thousands of cherished memories are accumulated throughout one’s life. When memories start to fade as a result of age or a condition like dementia, the effects can be devastating. That’s why it’s important for caregivers to partake in memory-promoting activities with those suffering from dementia.

One such activity is looking through a memory book. This kind of book can help patients remember important experiences. Memory books also encourage conversations about these experiences, which is beneficial in terms of creating a strong patient-caregiver relationship. Creating and using a memory book can be an effective and enjoyable aspect of a  dementia care  plan.

What Is a Memory Book?

Simply put, a memory book is a brief record of one’s life. It provides several visual reminders of a person’s life experiences. Much like a scrapbook, the pages contain pictures and text surrounding a particular theme. Memory books can be organized in a variety of ways:

  • • Chronological
  • • Location-Specific
  • • Yearly Events (Such as Holidays)

It may be beneficial to create several different memory books for certain patients. This allows caregivers to ensure that the book is an appropriate size and weight for the client to lift and turn the pages.

How Are Memory Books Helpful for Dementia Patients?

For most people with dementia, remembering specific details about their lives gets harder over time. Experts understand that memories are often tied to each other. When someone loses one memory, they may struggle to recall others that happened at a similar time or place. The memory book serves as a permanent reminder that does not require much time or skill to interpret. Pictures may be the most representative, as they can jog the memory and bring important information to mind.

What Should a Memory Book Include?

Memory books are a useful tool to help people preserve their memories as long as possible. They should include a variety of important information about a person’s life. This might involve:

  • • Pictures of Their Hometown and Past Residences
  • • Family Members, Friends, and Pets from the Past and Present
  • • Employment and Educational History
  • • Military Experience (If Applicable)
  • • Hobbies
  • • Favorite Meals
  • • Holidays and Regular Family Parties

Text, dates, and other information are optional, though they can serve as a conversation starting point for caregivers. What’s most important is that pictures are printed clearly on each page.

How Do You Make a Memory Book?

There are several different ways to create a memory book. If you’ll be including photos that were taken with a digital camera, consider using a printing service to make your book. Printed books are more durable, and you won’t risk damaging the pictures in the process. They’re also much faster and easier to make which is ideal if you will be making multiple books.

For photos that were taken before the advent of digital photography, consider using a photo album with protective sleeves. Photo albums are a great way to include a large number of photos in one book. However, many don’t offer convenient places to include captions and other text.

If you’re looking for something more personal, a scrapbook is your best option. Scrapbooks can be customized to fit your exact needs. Plus, they can be a fun project for grandchildren or other relatives. Remember to use acid-free cardstock for your pages, as it will not damage the photographs and other paper items in the book. Stiff cardstock also makes the pages easier to turn. If the pictures are rare or difficult to replace, it may be helpful to scan the images before gluing them to the page or using photocopied versions instead of originals.
